Moffat Beach

Moffat beach is a spectacular North facing coastal site

Set amongst the ancient lava flows of the caloundra headland, take a gander at the baby turtles that can often be seen off the eastern lip. Launch is a small clearing on a steep sea cliff and requires solid ground handling skills.

Safety Hazards

  1. There is a road behind launch and a cliff in front of launch.
  2. There are rocks below launch, and no sand. If you have to land there be careful not to drop the wing into the surf or slip on rocks.
  3. The general public are often present at this site.

4. The landing area is small, with rocks above the beach.
5. The landing directly below cliff can be dangerous due to wind shadow. If possible try to land further away from the cliff if safe to do so.
6. Do not fly this site if tide is too high to allow safely landing on the beach.

Launch

Launch is very small area on edge of cliff, full size wings may need to lay glider on railing to launch.
Due to the cliff in front of launch, the pilot may get lifted off their feet when inflating the wing, so good wing control is needed.
Do not try to launch when winds are too strong.
Beware of cars behind launch avoid getting dragged into them also is a busy road. an assistant to help launch is recommended.

Landing Zone

Landing is to the west of launch on the beach, be mindful of general public when landing as this beach is small and busy. Accurate landing skills are required. Be mindful not to land on the rocks behind the beach as injury is very likely.

Top landing is generally not possible unless very cross.
Do not land on the road.

To fly this site you must:

  • Abide by the SCSA Code of Conduct, SAFA flight rules and SCC permit conditions – see website
  • Be suitably qualified as a pilot: PG4 or intermediate HG
  • Obtain a site briefing from the Duty Pilot or Senior Safety Officer if visiting or new to this site. Contact details
  • Use a radio: VHF 125.85MHz Caloundra Airfield, UHF channel 14 default frequency.
  • Maintain clearances from members of public on beach and pathways
  • Watch for Surf Rescue helicopter
  • Consider effects of tide on landing zone
  • Small launch area unsuitable for large wings
